What Does a Deck Actually Cost in Christchurch?

The honest answer: anywhere from $8,000 to $60,000+, depending on the size, material, height, and what's included. That's a wide range, so let's break it down into something useful.

Most residential decks in Christchurch fall between $15,000 and $35,000 fully installed. Here's what moves the number.

The Biggest Cost Drivers

Material choice is the biggest variable. Treated pine is the budget option: it works fine, takes stain well, and is widely available. H4 treated pine decking typically costs $80–$120 per square metre supplied. Kwila (also called Merbau) is the premium hardwood most Christchurch homeowners choose when they want something that looks sharp and lasts, expect $180–$260 per square metre supplied. Composite decking sits between the two on cost but has the lowest maintenance of all.

Deck size is obvious, but it's worth noting that the cost-per-square-metre usually drops as the deck gets larger, because the fixed costs (consents, mobilisation, framing setup) spread across more area.

Height matters more than people expect. A ground-level deck is structurally simple. A deck elevated 600mm or more needs engineered posts, bracing, and sometimes a building consent all of which add cost. Anything above 1.5m from the ground definitely needs consent.

Balustrades can easily add $4,000–$12,000 to a project. Timber balustrades are the cheapest option. Glass, frameless or semi-frameless, is the premium choice and is what we install most often on coastal and elevated Christchurch properties.

Pergolas and shade structures are increasingly bundled with decks. A simple timber pergola over a deck adds $6,000–$18,000 depending on span and whether it's louvred or fixed.

Rough Cost Guide by Project Type

Project Type Approx. Installed Cost
Small ground-level pine deck (20–30m²) $8,000 – $14,000
Mid-size kwila deck with balustrade (30–50m²) $18,000 – $32,000
Large elevated deck + glass balustrade (50m²+) $35,000 – $60,000+
Deck + pergola combo Add $8,000 – $20,000

These are installed figures including materials, labour, consent (if required), and a basic rubbish removal. They don't include landscaping, lighting, or outdoor furniture.

Do You Need a Building Consent?

In Christchurch, a deck under 1.5m above ground and no larger than 20m² is usually exempt from building consent. Anything outside those parameters requires a consent from Christchurch City Council, typically $1,200–$2,500 in consent fees and 20 working days to approve.

Ecocare manages the consent process for you. We prepare the documentation, lodge the application, and follow up. You don't have to deal with the council.

What a Quote From Ecocare Includes

When we quote a deck job, you get a written breakdown covering: decking material and grade, framing and post specification, balustrade type, consent status (exempt or applied for), and a clear timeline.

No hidden charges. No ambiguous line items. We've seen too many homeowners get surprised at the end of a job by things that should have been in the quote from day one.
